DESERT
Anything south, north, east, west, under, over, near, or far from Chicago is nothing more then desert, desert, desert, except for the now-salty Lake Michigan. And we're not talking the kind of desert with two s's that keeps your tummies cool in the summer time. We're talking about a hot, dusty, cloudless terrain for nothing but hundreds of miles. Nothing green to provide shade or shelter, and the only friendly face you'll find is in the mirages that pester you into insanity.
It's a loveless place and no one will be there to offer help. You're on your own until you're lucky enough to find some run down building, or a group of large boulders placed awkwardly and haphazardly in random places. Don't worry though. If you don't die from starvation or dehydration, the creatures that stalk the night will be there to eat you.
